He will never forget the day his father walked him to a nearby warehouse where he said he was storing the car. Inside, all Jay saw was a huge pile of engine parts and two halves to two different cars—the front end of a Dodge Omni and the back half of a Plymouth Horizon—welded together. “He handed me a thick manual, looked me in the eye and said ‘good luck, son,’” he says. “He wanted me to put it together with my own two hands.”

Lasting Lessons
It took Jay several months to build the car and get it running. It was still a piece of junk—not nearly as nice as the 1956 Chevrolet Belair wagon he owns today, which he likes to take to classic car shows and drive around town with his wife, Jennifer and daughters, Gracie and Amelia. But he’ll tell you the experience left a lasting impression on him. Through the build, he learned that if you visualize your goals and work hard to realize them, you can achieve amazing results. When Jay embarked upon his career in construction, this philosophy was a guiding force. After graduating from the College of Charleston, he worked his way up through the ranks of the industry. From framing to drywall to ultimately becoming project manager, he experienced every facet of the building process before starting his own custom home company.
